So this Tuesday marks 10 weeks. Wow! 10 weeks already. I am sad to say I am nowhere near where I thought I'd be by now.
Last I left off, I spoke of an infection or something under my skin causing soreness and swelling. That was at just over 8 weeks and it is my left foot that I had been complaining about all along. I did go to the doctor again right before my trip and although it wasn't gone, it was getting better. The pain and soreness in that area had subsided while I was on antibiotics. The doctor did not want to do anything since it was getting better on its own. He did give me another round of antibiotics since I was due to run out the first day of my trip out of town.
So last weekend was the big chaperoning trip to Dallas. I am glad to say I made it through, although my feet were very sore throughout the day and nights from all the standing and running, literally running, around we did for four days. Had to stay on top of the Ibuprofin or else.
It also just so happened that our son and family's flights in from Japan came while us girls were out of town, so we missed their first couple of days back home. I ended up taking a full day off last Tuesday just to catch up and spend some time with the kids.
My other son moved on Thursday of this week and I've spend a good amount of time watching our other grandson each day so they can get things done in their new place without a one-year-old in the way.
So, this is why I haven't written in a few weeks! :)
Back to my feet. Yesterday was my last antibiotic. I am in a wait and see mode. The sore has finally healed by my foot is still unusually swollen in the same spot that has been an issue.
I have been to the gym and have increased my walking speed significantly. I tried running a little before my trip and my feet weren't quite ready yet. I am going to try again this week and see what happens. They are still very sore when I do any big amount of walking. Yesterday we walked the mall for a few hours and I was ready to put them up for the rest of the night. Wonder when the soreness will ever go away and I can wear my old shoes again? I really expected I would be there by now.
This blog documents my experience of having a chevron bunionectomy on both feet at the same time.

8 Weeks - Post Surgery
Time for an update.
I had my last PT appointment last Friday. I had three sessions all together in two weeks. Each time I was given a few more exercises. The exercises have truly made me feet flexible enough again to get almost 100% of my walking abilities back. Everyday my walking is stronger and quicker - more like I used to. I even caught myself running up the stairs barefoot this weekend.
I went back to the gym for the first time last Wednesday. My feet were a little stiff, especially since I work out at 5:30 in the morning, but I made it through a mile on the treadmile and a half mile on the elliptical, before finishing with weights and core.
On Friday I did another walking mile on the treadmill, picking up the speed and a mile on the elliptical, then weights and core.
On Saturday my husband and I did a 1-1/2 mile walk outside. I have to say, my feet were a bit sore on Saturday, not sure if it was the concrete or two days in a row walking, but it didn't set me back.
As for the progress of the actual incisions, swelling and healing, I've continued to have a problem with my left foot. There is a small spot that hasn't quite healed. It is still swollen and very sore to touch. At my last PT appointment last Friday, the therapist said she thought perhaps there was something inside like a stitch that was causing an infection and not allowing that area to heal. She told me to contact my doctor about it.
I took a photo and sent to my doctor. They phoned me back right away and put me on antibiotics and told me to use warm compresses several times a day to try to encourage whatever was inside to come out. They told me if it wasn't gone to call back on Tuesday and set up an appointment for Wednesday.
Friday I began antibiotics and warm/hot salt water soaks on the left foot. Sunday evening during one of my scar manipulations I noticed that for the first time ever, that sore area was not sore when I applied pressure on the scar. Apparently the antibiotics were working?
I continued the warm water foot baths throughout the weekend, and although the pain and swelling is less, it is not gone. I called the doctor this morning to report the status and I now have an appointment scheduled in the morning to take a look. I have a feeling they are going to have to cut it open in that spot and clean it out, then steristrip it -- that's my guess any way.
My goal is to get this resolved once and for all tomorrow. This is the big weekend of the trip I am chaperoning and I will be on my feet the better part of Friday through Monday. I am hoping that whatever is in there comes out and I am on the final path to healing!
Will try to get an update in tomorrow on what happened at the doctor.
